EHR214 Skill Acquisition - Charles Sturt University
TASK
For this task, you are required to choose a partner (classmate, relative, friend etc.). You will develop a three-week evidence-based motor skill learning program that applies all of the theory you have learnt about, such as practice schedules, design, planning, feedback etc. to your selected motor skill and/or motor skill problem. You will then IMPLEMENT this learning program by coaching your partner, and assess their learning via appropriate methods for measuring motor performance. You will then complete a scientific report on the training program that you developed, and the learner outcomes. The report should be organised and structured in a similar format to that of a research journal article and consist of the following sections:
• Project Title Page: On the front page, provides an informative title for your project based on the motor skill and objectives and a link to your video (see below).
• Introduction: Provides background and context to introduce the motor skill situation and objective. This section should address the following key elements:
o In relation to your chosen motor skill,
- evaluate the task situational and personal factors operating in this specific motor skill situation and explain their influence on motor behaviour
- assess the demands placed on the performer and identify the functional requirements during the execution of your chosen motor skill
- explain the factors affecting the transfer of motor skill learning from one situation to another
- establish appropriate types of practice that should enhance learning
o State the purpose of the motor learning project/case study. Appropriate aims and hypotheses making predictions of performance changes should be included
• Methods: Provides a detailed description of the design and implementation of the 3-week intervention, including the frequency and duration of supervised and unsupervised practice sessions, practice design and types of strategies used, resources used, the structure of the practice environment, any modifications to practice, how you set goals and facilitated motivation, how and when you revised the practice activities to increase challenge as needed and so forth. Procedures used to assess motor learning and the extent of goal achievement should also be described. Figures or tables should be used where appropriate. This section should address the following key elements:
o Detail strategies and methods for assessing and measuring motor performance within the motor skill project. This should include the following subheadings:
§ Participant information
§ Equipment and Procedures
§ Data Analysis
o Detail positive transfer strategies implemented within the motor skill learning project
o Detail strategies used for directing attention and enhancing motor memory within the motor skill project
o Detail methods used for providing instruction and feedback to enhance learning within the motor skill project
o The design and details of practice activities and schedules used to enhance learning in various situations within the motor skill project
• Results: Describe the observed effects of the intervention on the learner's performance, including data obtained at baseline, periodic reassessment, and final assessment, where appropriate. Figures or tables should be used to present the data as appropriate. This section should address the following key element:
o Present results in a way that facilitates the diagnosis and evaluation of the motor learning project
• Discussion: Provide an honest and realistic discussion and evaluation of your results using relevant literature. How successful was the intervention? Was there evidence of motor learning? Why/Why not? What problems did you encounter and how were they addressed? What were the shortcomings of your practice strategies and how would you redesign your program in the future to improve learning? Even though goal-setting, feedback, and so on have been shown in the literature to be effective, it doesn't mean that they always work in practice. So in the discussion you should analyse what did not work for you/your client and why/why not. This section should address the following key elements:
o Restate the purpose of your motor skill project and evaluate your observations and results in relation to your stated hypotheses
o In relation to your observations and results,
- discuss how motor abilities may explain aspects of the learner's behaviour and their capacity for skill learning
- discuss the contribution of the sensory system to the control and production of the chosen motor skill
- give neuromotor explanations of control and discuss how motor control and learning theories relate to your chosen motor skill
- discuss the relevance of skill acquisition theory to professional practice in human movement settings
