Assignment:

Investigating the Effects of Metabolic Toxins on Cellular Respiration

The following assignment will be for marks. It is important you are able to display an ability to complete scientific investigations on a variety of course concepts.

Choose one of the following metabolic toxins to investigate:

  • Abtimycin
  • Cyanide
  • Hydrogen sulfide
  • Malonate
  • Oligomycin
  • Rotenone
  • Arsenic

Find four sources of information about your chosen metabolic toxin. Search for and collect the following information:

  • What are its physical properties?
  • When and why was it first developed and used?
  • How does it work? (What is its effect on metabolism?)
  • How dangerous is it?
  • What, if any, evidence is there to link it to human disorders?
  • What, if any, antidotes or treatments for exposure are there?

Analyze your research

  1. Meet with another student and classify the metabolic toxins you both investigated on the basis of the metabolic pathway they affect.
  2. Look over your sources and assess their accuracy (why do you think you have chosen accurate sources?)
