Assessment: Mapping and Critical Reflection

Description: In this task, you are required to critically analyse teaching in the early years, focusing on three key areas:

relationships with children
partnerships with families and communities
inclusion and diversity

Instructions:

Part 1: Steps Along the Bridge: Becoming an Early Childhood Teacher

First step is to draw/paint/sketch/create a bridge.

One side of the bridge represents your past experiences, beliefs, assumptions, and early understandings of teaching. Choose a few words and/or artefacts to represent your past experiences. These words/artefacts must appear on one side of your bridge.

The other side of the bridge represents where you are going. Note your emerging teaching philosophy, professional values, and future practice as an early childhood professional on the bridge using single words and/or artefacts.

Then, once the bridge is created, you must position yourself on the bridge to show where you currently are in your professional journey. You can choose to draw a picture of you or add a photo of you on the bridge.

Your bridge should visually reflect growth, learning, challenges, and shifts in your thinking about early childhood teaching.

Part 2: The Critical Reflection

Relationships with children

Now: Is there a shift? How has my thinking changed?

What is the significance of relationships with children in early childhood teaching?

Partnerships with families and communities

In this task, you will create a visual representation of your professional journey as an early childhood teacher using a bridge. One side of the bridge represents your past experiences, beliefs, assumptions, and early understandings of teaching. You will include key words or artefacts that reflect where you started. The other side represents your future as a professional, highlighting your emerging teaching philosophy, professional values, and goals for future practice, again using single words or artefacts.

You must place yourself somewhere on the bridge to show your current position in your professional journey. This visual should demonstrate your growth, learning, challenges, and shifts in thinking about early childhood education.

Part 2: Critical Reflection

After completing the bridge, you will critically reflect on your professional growth using the provided template. For each key area, you will respond to four components:

Before: Describe your initial beliefs, assumptions, and understandings at the beginning of the course.
Now: Explain how your thinking has changed and what influenced those changes.
Significance: Discuss why this area is important in effective early childhood teaching and learning.
Future Practice: Outline the strategies you will apply in your future teaching practice.

This section requires critical analysis and clear connections between your bridge representation and your developing professional identity as an early childhood teacher.
