Assessment: Case Study
The first assessment task for this unit is a case study [2000 words]. Each student will choose a population group to write a case study. Case study will explore and critically analyse communication and cultural factors impacting health and wellbeing of the chosen population group from the following list. All students must discuss the population group chosen with their lecturer for approval. Please ensure you cite at least 7-10 peer-reviewed papers.

3. Rural and Remote Australians
4. Homeless Populations in Australia
5. Refugees Populations in Australia
6. Women Experiencing Domestic Violence in Australia (or elsewhere)

Assessment outline
Introduction: introduce your population group for this case study and explain what you are going to cover in this case study.
Context of population group: describe social, economic, cultural, demographic and structural context of the population group using statistics from ABS, AIHW and other government sources [reports, policy documents, data]
Health status and relative inequalities: critically analyse the status - compare morbidity, mortality, chronic diseases and lifestyle risk factors of the chosen population groups with mainstream Australian populations and discuss why the inequalities exist in those measures. You must use evidence from ABS, AIHW and published research articles to support your analysis and discussion.
Communication and cultural factors impacting health outcomes: identify critical communication and cultural factors influencing health beliefs, knowledge and practice of the population groups. Discuss how these factors contributes to the health outcomes for that population groups. Use evidence from published research articles and government reports for this part of the case study.
Strategies to address communication and cultural barriers: identify effective strategies and approaches to address the communication and cultural barriers impacting access to health information, services and resources for improved health outcomes of the population group. Discuss how these strategies could enable better access and help to address health disparities in the context of your population group. Use evidence from published research articles for this part of the case study.
