ECON 104 Principles of Macroeconomics - Camosun College
FINAL PROJECT
The final project will build upon and use the analysis and graphs that you generated for your selected country through the research assignments during the course.
Scenario for the Final Project: you are advising a Canadian financial fund manager on investing funds in your selected country. For instance, this could be a pension fund seeking opportunities to invest millions of dollars in local financial bonds in your selected country. It is foreign portfolio investment; it is not an investor wanting to set up a business through foreign direct investment. You are the economist providing critical insights into the local economy, which will be based on the most relevant variables covered in the seven research assignments. You will need to consider how the economic conditions in the country could affect financial returns and risks for a foreign portfolio investor.
Detailed Instructions for the Final Project: Write a report of approximately 2,000 words, or 4 pages of text if single-spaced (not counting any title page or appendix, or embedded graphs or tables). There is not a required font; this document is in calibri size 11, which works well. To be submitted as a PDF file, following APA writing standards. You will need to outline the state of the economy of your selected country, based on a selection of the variables that were covered in the seven research assignments, and consider how these might affect the potential returns or risks for investing by a foreign fund manager. Some risks might relate to possible future policy changes by the government (or central bank) in response to economic conditions. Since they are based in Canada and will be investing Canadian funds, the financial fund manager will be interested in comparisons with Canada where this is relevant. Although the global Covid- 19 pandemic has impacted all economies globally since early 2020, it will not be the major focus of the analysis.
You will need to provide a clear recommendation to the Canadian financial fund manager on whether they should, or should not, invest in your selected country, and explain your recommendation based on the macroeconomic variables you have analyzed.
The report should start with a summary of approximately 250 words, or half a page of text if single-spaced. This summary should include your overall recommendation, with reasoning for this recommendation based on macroeconomic considerations. The summary should not include any graphs or tables.
The main part of the report will provide the detailed evidence and analysis to support the recommendation. It is not expected that you will necessarily set out the information in the same order that the research assignments were completed. You will need to focus particular attention on the macroeconomic variables that you consider most important for informing the investor's decision. Just as with the individual research assignments, you are not expected to provide any information that is beyond what is available in the graphs and tables: no knowledge of the country is required. If you do provide additional information, you will not lose marks (but remember that you have limited space) but you will not be awarded extra marks. Marks will be awarded for incorporating analysis that demonstrates an understanding of the relevant areas of macroeconomics covered during the course.
Graphs and data tables: You will select ten variables to analyze in the report, at least one variable from each research assignment, and three additional variables from any of the assignments (a total of 10 macroeconomic variables). Preferably, you will embed the graphs of these variables alongside the text in the document. You can also insert the graphs at the end of the report if you have embedding them alongside the text (make sure that it is very clear in the text which graph is being referred to). You should not include all of the graphs and tables that were generated as part of the research assignments; you need to select those that you think are most relevant to informing the investor's decision.
