Task 1:

A simply supported beam of length 6 m has point loads of 20 kN, 60 kN position 1.5 m and 4 m from the left hand support respectively. Running along the full length of the beam is a uniformly distributed load of 3.5 kN/m:

a) Draw the shear force diagram and indicate the position of maximum bending moment.

b) Use the shear force diagram to construct the bending moment diagram and determine the value of the maximum bending moment.

c) Determine the elastic section modulus.

d) Select a suitable universal beam from relevant British Standard tables, assuming a factor of safety of 6 and using Grade 50 Weldable

Task 2:

A solid shaft is to transmit 125 kW at 290 rev/min, however, the shear stress in the shaft must not exceed 60 MPa: Determine the minimum diameter of shaft required and the torque generated. Outline how the mass of the shaft could be reduced whilst still retaining the working specification.

Task 3:

A solid steel shaft has a diameter of 34 mm and is subjected to a torque of 800 Nm. Determine the maximum shear stress induced in the shaft and angle of twist if it is 900 mm long. Take the shear modulus as 80 GPa.
