A student performs the following dihybrid cross with fruit flies: True-breeding females with wild type gray body color and pink eye color (e+e+ pp) are mated to true-breeding males with ebony body color and wild type red eye color (ee p+p+). The ebony body color (e) and pink eye color (p) mutations are both recessive. Both are known to be autosomal traits. Heterozygous F1 females are mated to tester males (ee pp). Five hundred F2 flies were obtained and the body and eye color phenotypes of the F2 offspring are in the table below
Gray body, pink eyes - 195 , Ebony body, red eyes -185, Gray body, red eyes - 63, Ebony body, pink eyes - 57
a. Are the genes for body color and eye color independently assorting or linked? Explain your answer.
