Consider a pool table where a billiard ball of mass M and radius R, initially at rest on the table, is hit so that the ball is given an initial center of mass speed Vo and a backspin with angular speed Wo . A kinetic friction force acts on the ball as it slides on the table. Take the moment of inertia of the ball about its center of mass to be I=(2/5)MR2
Draw a free body diagram of all the forces acting on the ball during its motion, prior to undergoing pure rolling.
Find the critical angular speed Wc such that, if Wo=Wc, the kinetic friction will bring the ball to a complete stop. Give answer in terms of Vo and R.
If the magnitude of the initial backspin is Wo = 1.25Wc, determine the ball's center of mass velocity when it starts to roll without slipping.
Give answer in terms of Vo
A sphere of radius R is uniformly charged to a total charge of Q. It is made to spin about an axis that passes through its center with an angular speed ω. Find the magnitude of the resulting magnetic field at the center of the sphere.
