Here, as before, never, so help you mercy, How strange or odd some'er I bear myself (As I perchance hereafter shall think meet To put an antic disposition on)" The literary device used in this quote from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is dramatic irony. Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows something that the characters in the narrative do not. In this quote, Hamlet is speaking to his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. He tells them that he might act strange or odd in the future ("put an antic disposition on"). The irony lies in the fact that the audience, having knowledge of Hamlet's plans, understands that Hamlet's madness is feigned as part of his plan to avenge his father's death. However, the characters within the play (like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern) do not have this knowledge and are left to wonder about Hamlet's strange behavior.
