Homework: Traditional Press Release Worksheet- Announcement to Different Audiences
This homework assesses the objective:
'Given an intended audience and a purpose, you should be able to prepare announcements so that the intended audience pays attention to them by the time you complete this lesson.'
This homework has these three parts:
1. Planning the presentation of your announcements before you begin writing them by completing a Planning Form (Appendix A), that prompts you to identify the intended audience(s); their goal(s) in reading the announcement; the different versions of your announcement for different outlets (such as traditional press release or social media) and audiences; related issues, such as the "appetite" of the audience for information, and the level at which to target the description (nibbler, grazer, or hungry heifer); and the sources you plan to check in order to research the subject of the article.
2. Writing the basic announcement itself.
3. Writing at least two variations of the announcement, for different audience(s) and outlets (such as a traditional press release or for social media). In total, you will write three versions of this announcement: the basic, initial one, and then two variations, each time for a defined audience via a defined outlet.

Part 1: Prepare Your Homework
Plan the presentation of your announcement
|
Conduct research on your topic, then complete the Planning Form (Appendix A).
|
Draft the basic announcement and variations for different outlets
|
Following the plans written in the Planning Form, draft the announcement and its variations for different outlets.
When drafting the announcement, please respect these guidelines:
1. Use Times New Roman, 12-point type
2. Single-space the homework
|
Note: This differs from earlier homeworks, in which you were asked to double-space the material.
1. Try to keep each version of the announcement to 750 words maximum (this is now a word count, rather than a page limit, because that is how this work is typically assigned).
2. Include all of the key parts of an announcement
|
Check the homework
|
In preparing your homework for submission, make sure to:
1. Include the Planning Form (required)
2. Draft the announcement and its variations:
a. Prepare it in the announcement format that is presented in the course
b. Label each page with the intended outlet for the announcement. For example, if the announcement on page 1 is a traditional press release, label page 1 'Traditional Press Release'. If the announcement on page 2 is an announcement for Facebook, label page 2 'Facebook Post'.
Also, check your homework against the grading criteria (see Appendix B).
|
As you prepare the
announcement, follow these guidelines
|
A single MS Word file that includes the following components:
A. At the beginning of the homework, insert the completed Planning Form (see Appendix A).
B. After the planning form, insert the announcement and its variations.
Again: indicate the intended outlet for each version of the announcement. For example, if the announcement on page 1 is a traditional press release, label it 'Traditional Press Release'. If the announcement on page 2 is an announcement for Facebook, label it 'Facebook Post'.
For example: Suppose you are writing the announcement of a new Dean at Concordia, you would prepare:
1. A Planning Form using the template from Appendix A
2. The announcement and its variations, with each page labelled clearly with the outlet for which it is intended
