An 70 kg basketball player catches a pass in the air, lands on his feet, and then immediately jumps to dunk the ball. His vertical velocity is 2 m/s downward just before touching the ground after catching the pass, and his vertical velocity is 3 m/s upward when his feet leave the ground to dunk.

(a) What is the vertical impulse required to slow his downward velocity to zero after catching the pass?

(b) After his velocity has been slowed to zero, what is the vertical impulse required to generate the upward velocity to make the dunk?

(c) If it takes 0.5 s to complete the entire landing/jumping movement, what is the average vertical force exerted upward by the floor on the player during this time?

(d) What could the player do to reduce the average vertical force required to make the dunk?
