Purpose:"The dominant narrative of early America is that people came here to practice their religion freely; however, as you have learned, many settlers came here for other reasons, and even when their main goal was to achieve freedom of religion, that meant different things to different groups of people. The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate that you understand the various ideologies and worldviews of the writers you have been reading and to demonstrate that you understand the ambiguities and contradictions inherent in the ideas that have been discussed. The focus for the conversation will be on the writers' views of what it means to be an American."
