Homework: Monday Morning Quarterback
Description
Immediacy, in the context of communication, refers to the practice of bringing the interview subject into the present moment, addressing current emotions, behaviors, or statements. It is a powerful technique in interviews, especially with suspects, to build rapport, clarify misunderstandings, and gain insights into their thoughts and feelings.
Objective:
In this homework you are going to be an observer and "Monday morning quarterback" what you see. Your task is to observe an interaction taking place where there is an argument, disagreement, or a tense situation occurring between two people. This could be at a local restaurant, in your work place, or even in a social setting. Your goal is not to intervene, but to analyze the situation as it plays out. Examine the parties body language, closely watch their emotions and listen to their statements. As you watch pay attention to how body language changes and how the parties respond to each other. Does this interaction make you uncomfortable? Are there things that you are thinking that shock you as you watch this play out? Think about the ways that you would approach that differently.
Then in a 2 to 3 pages summary, describe the situation and articulate your analysis being sure to make reference to the material we have covered in this course. Be mindful of the key terms and the ways we have discussed handling certain situations such as confrontation. Was anyone using reflecting behaviors in the situation?
