Assignment:
Our study of African cultures has led us to reflect upon the broad aspect of African history as well as its interaction with the Western world. To that effect, the close connect between colonization and the changing nature of the Africans is well established and Chinua Achebe seems to have captured this situation quite effectively in Arrow of God.
In light of the discussions and presentations in class:
Part I
-Does it appear to you that Africans had structured and functional societies? Discuss.
-With Western nations entering the African continent, what happened to the social setup there? Was Africa the same? Explain.
-A lot of negative literature was generated, downgrading Africa/Africans. Who were the agents of that negativity? Cite at least three such examples and discuss some of the content of their work.
-what role would you have assigned the intellectuals, the authors, the artists of the Continent, as they faced the barrage of hardships coming from the West?
-After colonization has come and gone for more than sixty years now, considering the current condition of the African continent, can one say that Africa is better off today? Elaborate.
-Use examples from Achebe's book, Arrow of God to illustrate of your arguments.
Part II
- Elaborate on your read of the condition of the women in the story.
- Contrast that with today's women in modern Africa.
- Could it be argued that Achebe may have played a role in this transformation? Explain.
