Section III: Short Essay

A. Describe the possible meanings and implications of the following quote. Include background information specifically regarding the Moore reading behind the quote. You can connect this to other concepts discussed in class as well. Use points from lectures, notes and readings to support your points. 2-3 paragraphs (hint: a paragraph is 3-5 sentences). TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW:

The Greeks told the story of the Minotaur, the bull-headed flesh-eating man who lived in the center of the labyrinth. He was a threatening beast, and yet his name was Aserion---Star. I often think of this paradox as I sit with someone with tears in her eyes, searching for some way to deal with a death, a divorce, or a depression. It is a beast, this thing that stirs in the core of her being, but it is also the star of her innermost nature. We have to care for this suffering with extreme reverence so that, in our fear and anger at the beast, we do not overlook the star.
-Thomas Moore

B. Explain this quote by David Abram and how it relates to his ideas of sensation and perception. How do his definitions relate to the environmental movement and to how we relate to the earth? Include background information specifically regarding the reading behind the quote. Use points from lectures, notes and readings to support your points. 2-3 paragraphs (hint: a paragraph is 3-5 sentences). TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW:

The world and I reciprocate one another. The landscape as I directly experience it is hardly a determinate object; it is an ambiguous realm that responds to my emotions and calls forth feelings from me in turn.

C. Explain how the following quote correlates to Hillman's idea of the "Bad Seed". Some questions to consider. What are the implications for society's involvement in forming such "Bad Seeds"? Does Hillman believe that a "bad seed" can be prevented? What are the problems with current psychological systems of prevention and actual prevention? 2-3 paragraphs (hint: a paragraph is 3-5 sentences). TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW:

A society that willfully insists upon innocence as the noblest of virtues and worships innocence at its altars in Orlando and Anaheim and on Sesame Street, will be unable to see any seed of any kind unless it be sugar-coated. Like Forrest Gump eating chocolates and offering sweets to strangers before he ever looks into their eyes, stupid is as stupid does. The idea that there is a Bad Seed, that there is a demonic call, should startle our native intelligence, awakening it from the innocence of our American theories so that as a nation we can see that evil is attracted to, belongs with, innocence. Then we might finally recognize that in America, Natural Born Killers are the secret companions of, are prompted by, Forrest Gumps. (pp. 247-248)
