Paper Topics:
1. Unlike most contemporary political theorists, classical political theorists (and those inspired by them) take the strong position that political communities ought to try to influence the beliefs, values, virtues, desires, choices, and habits of their citizens. Why do they take this position? What do they believe can and should be accomplished through such influence, whether it be through education, socialization, cultural norms, or legal regulation? Compare how Plato, Aristotle, and Lane would each answer these questions.
2. Does a political community have a "telos"? If so, what is it? If not, why not? Compare how Aristotle, Plato, and Lane would each answer these questions. (Be sure to explain what a "telos" is!)
3. What is the relationship between "justice" (or in Lane's case, "sustainability") and "self-interest," whether that of individuals or whole political communities? Are the two things opposed? If so, why? Alternatively, is there some connection between the two? If so, what is the nature of the connection? Compare how Plato, Lane, and either Aristotle or Thucydides might answer these questions.
4. As part of her overall investigation of Aristotle's argument about women, Bradshaw discusses Aristotle's concept of "prudence" or "practical wisdom." What is prudence, and why is it important for politics in Aristotle's view? How are Plato and Lane's concepts of knowledge similar or different to Aristotle's concept of prudence? Why do they each think their own concept of knowledge is important for politics? In other words, compare how Aristotle, Plato, and Lane each view the kind of knowledge most relevant to politics. Note: you may rely mostly on Bradshaw's article to answer the question about Aristotle, but consider what you learned directly the Politics as well.
Analyze but do not evaluate.
