Objective: To practice using "I" language in developing a constructive complaint.

  • Criticism frequently involves language that causes the other person to become defensive and self-protective. Rather than criticize a behavior that you find dissatisfying, it is better to use language that presents a constructive complaint.

A constructive complaint

  1. makes a fact-based observation about the person's behavior. It can also include how that behavior makes you feel.
  2. states what you want the person to do using "I" language without sounding demanding.

uses a direct but calm tone of voice.

Directions: Restate the following negative criticisms to form constructive complaints using "I" language. You may want to review the section about using "I" language in Chapter 8, "Communicating Verbally." The following statement provides an example:

  • Example: "You never do anything around here."
  • Constructive complaint: "The Johnsons are coming for dinner at seven tonight and you're watching the ballgame. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed at all I still have to do. I would really like your help with vacuuming and dusting.
