Case Study: Think about selective attention and other related ideas by using real-world scenarios in the following questions. Use hunger as an example of a motivational state that influences attention. Consider the role that repeated exposure plays in the popularity of commercials and songs.

Questions:

1. Motivational states play important roles in attention.
When you are hungry, you notice food more often than when you are not hungry. Give examples of other motivations that play a role in attention.

2. Repeated exposure may increase attention to particular stimuli.
Give one example to something to which you have paid more attention and perhaps even have grown to like because of repeated exposure to the stimuli.

3. Exposure to constant stimuli can cause a person to become habituated or accustomed to it.
Give one example of something that you hardly even notice because you have become accustomed to them (think of visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory examples).

4. Do you think that personality characteristics play a role in attention? Can you think of any examples where you think some people sometimes seem to be more or less attentive than others?
