2. Describe one benefit of group membership.
3. Describe one limitation of group membership.
4. Read the text below and respond to the questions:
The year is 2014 and North American women can be surgeons and men can be hairstylists. There are stay-at-home dads and CEO moms. Girls can choose to play hockey if that's their preference and boys can read books as a hobby. Why then do some people care about and comment on the colour of clothes in which adults dress their children?
Katie Dupuis bought a package of blue boys' Pull-Ups (a brand of potty training pants), for her daughter because the girls' version was sold out and she didn't want to return to the store later just to buy the pink ones. Her daughter didn't mind the boy's version and, in fact, liked the characters on the pants because they were from Monsters Inc. - one of her favourite movies.
When Dupuis was looking at infant pants for her daughter with the thought that she might re-use them for future children (who might be male), a fellow shopper commented that she would never dress her son in her daughter's hand-me-down(previously worn) clothes. This comment surprised Dupuis because, as the second of four children, she often wore her older brother's hand-me-downs.
Answer these after reading:
1. Do you think it is important for baby girls to wear pink and baby boys to wear blue, or does it matter is baby girls wear blue clothes and baby boys wear punk clothes? Explain (I don't think it does so please answer from this perspective)
2. Imagine you were asked to babysit a three-year-old child named Lee for a few hours. Lee is dressed in beige pants and a plain white t-shirt. Lee's parents believe in raising gender-neutral children and thus they do not tell you Lee's biological gender. Would not knowing Lee's gender be problematic for you? Would not knowing change how you interact with Lee? Explain.
3. Five-year-old fraternal twins Jack and Jill come from a large working-class family who believes in recycling and reusing all items when possible. Imagine that Jill has just had a growth spurt and her parents dress her in her older brother's black batman sweater. Jack is wearing Jill's pink unicorn t-shirt that no longer fits Jill. How do you think people in your neighbourhood, town, or community would react to Jack wearing a pink unicorn t-shirt and Jill a batman sweater? Explain.
4. If you had a child, how important would it be to you, to buy him or her culturally-defined gender-specific toys? Explain. (I would not care what toys to buy as long as they play with it so please use this perspective)
