When reviewing the overall control mechanisms of the body, the nervous system and the endocrine system are at the top of the list. The nervous system is responsible for the instant alterations in body function related to skeletal muscles and slower alteration including digestive mechanisms. When reviewing the endocrine system it becomes clear that the hormones can produce long last effects that can take hours to days to weeks to build up in the body to a level where change is observed.
