GETTING STARTED
In a 500-700 word argumentative (personal opinion) essay, respond to the ONE of the following ESSAY TOPICS:
- Do you control the way you use social media or does social media control you?
- Are we letting technology take us to places where we do not want to go?
- Has social media made for better or worse communication?
Argumentative Essay Assignment (Academic Argument)
This Argumentative essay is a personal response and can include your own personal opinions, reactions, examples, and observations. You may use personal pronouns in your essay (for example, "I"), but do not rely heavily on them (avoid 'I think that' or 'I believe that' etc.). Remember to avoid using unclear pronouns (e.g. you, we, our). Clarify your meaning and be specific. For this essay, I provided three sources for you to use as supporting evidence. You must choose ONE source to include in your essay. A minimum of three citations (either direct quotes or paraphrases) is required. You must carefully construct your essay with a strong structure - it is very easy to get off track with a response paper! Remember to include all the main components of a strong essay (thesis statement, topic sentences, supporting evidence, and conclusion) by using an essay outline to help you plan your response.
USING LOGIC, EMOTION, CREDIBILITY
Your essay will be evaluated on your ability to write a compelling argument. In order to do that, you will need to consider your use of Logic, Emotion and Credibility.
Here are some ways to do that:
Logic: Use strong reasoning, statistics, quotations and facts; organize your essay in a clear and concise way.
Emotion: Make a personal connection with your reader; use personal experience to introduce your topic; call your reader to action.
Credibility: Use quotations from reputable sources; explain how and why you are qualified to discuss this topic; use appropriate language, format and tone.
