Question
Diversity is an important role in developing curriculum especially as we continue to grow culturally across our country. It is important to bring culture into the classroom and make sure our students are being taught to the standards of the world and not just to the standards of where they live. Diversity allows us to become more culturally aware. I think that diversity also allows you a chance to expand knowledge among your students.
One of best ways to nurture intellectual competence is to allow your students the freedom to think. Historically, "students aren't often allowed to think freely" (Glatthorn, et al, 2019, p. 13). They don't grow intellectually when conversations are limited and lack depth. Students need to have tough conversations that challenge them to think critically to grow. The teacher can supply the knowledge and the curriculum, but they need guidance and coaching on how to think and use the learned information at higher levels. Teachers are often reticent about empowering their students and "giving them permission" to dig deeper and have healthy discourse about what they are learning. How can we encourage this type of learning environment in our schools?
