Question
When we think of "HIPAA" we think of "patient privacy". Let's discuss how HIPPA and HITECH relates to some of the topics we discussed so far in the course. Protected Health Information (PHI) can be stored on desktop PC's, Laptops, Smartphones, IT storage systems, MDDS systems, and medical devices. Think back to the readings and discussion around Cyber-Security.
How to contribute to this discussion:
1. Think back to the readings and discussion around Cyber-Security. What is one way that an organization can mitigate the risk of unauthorized individuals gaining access (intentional or by accident) to PHI?
2. In the emerging world of mobile technology, tele-health, and cloud based systems there is a need to create increased access to healthcare technology from outside the physical walls of the hospital. What is an example from your experience, what you've read, or any ideas that come to mind of why/how healthcare professionals may want remote access to health records or clinical systems?
3. Number 1 above is about removing access, and number 2 above is about adding access. How can we balance "access" vs "security" to provide innovative care yet protect the patient's privacy?
