Question 1: Contraception Selection

The criteria for selection of a specific contraceptive depends on the goal and life plan of the women who is seeking contraception and their future desire to become pregnant in the near future or later years (Kaunitz, 2018). A life plan is advisable because it serves as the basis for the type of contraceptive. Long-term modalities such as implants and IUDs have higher rates of pregnancy cessation than do oral pills and insertable rings or prophylaxis. This is due to the patient's effort to maintain them (Kaunitz, 2018). If there is a reason for not using hormonal therapy such as estrogen utilizing cancers, general intolerance, or personal preference long-term modalities are not feasible. Emergency contraception is a back-up method if the primary means of contraception has failed or if there is question as to the efficacy of the chosen method. Per Kaunitz (2018) it should not be used as the primary means of contraception. The most likely need for emergency contraception is the use or non-use of barrier methods. All contraceptive methods are reversible except for sterilization and in-depth discussion should be done with that patient if they mention this as an option due to the finality of it. This would also lead to a discussion about what their life plan is now and what it will be in the near future as well as many years later in their life. References
