Analyzing Subject Matter and Form

The purpose of this assignment is to have you look at, think about, and write carefully about a work of art, focusing on the subject matter and form

Choose a work of art from your textbook that appeals to you, and write a 500 word essay (2 pages) that does three things: 1) is an accurate verbal description of the visual appearance of the art work, 2) discusses the subject matter; and 3) discusses the visual form of the art work

For the description, try to imagine you are verbally describing it to someone who has not seen it, and write a short paragraph telling them what it looks like. You may find better reproductions of the art work and details if you search onl ine.

For the subject matter, discuss what it is a picture of, what it represents What thoughts, feelings, experiences, or memories might a typical viewer think about when looking at it

For the visual form, now discuss how the work of art is visually constructed. How would you characterize the lines, shapes, use of space, color, texture, etc.? Does the work have a center bi interest? How is it balanced? What is the expressive effect of all this?

Please hand in your essay hard copy in class. Be sure to attach a reproduction of your artwork, to your-essay.
