Bacteria: Sensitivity and Resistance to Antibiotics Post-Lab Report
Guiding Question: Are all bacteria equally susceptible to all antibiotics?
Objectives:
1.To investigate the degree of sensitivity of two bacterial species using a Kirby-Bauer test.
2.Discuss the use of antibiotics in the medical field and the future of antibiotics, including bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
Interpretation of the Kirby- Bauer Test:
1. Place the metric ruler across the zone of inhibition, at the widest diameter, and measure (in mm) from one edge of the zone to the other edge. HOLDING THE PLATE UP TO THE LIGHT MIGHT HELP. Give it a try!
2. If there is NO zone at all, report is as 0- even though the disk itself is around 7mm.
3. Zone diameter is reported in millimeters (mm). The disk diameter will actually be part of that number. Look up on the Zone Diameter Interpretive Table, and report results as susceptible, resistant, or intermediate. Knowing the antibiotic tested and Z.I. diameter, report the results of your finding that the bacteria is Resistant, Intermediate or Susceptible (Sensitive).
