Question: Your task is to select a situation in which there was an opportunity for someone to publicly account for their success. Your presentation will identify the success strategies used and evaluate the overall presentation of success. Your presentation will be 4-6 minutes.
To prepare for the presentation, you'll need to do some ‘homework.' First, code the transcript, looking for acclaiming (enhancements & entitlements) and disclaiming (detractions & dissociations) strategies. Include the coded transcript as an Appendix at the end of your outline. Transcripts will not be accepted via email. You have one upload; make sure your document is complete. Second, organize your discussion of the strategies. Chunk the ideas together, using the tables and strategies we have discussed in class/the readings. Third, prepare an outline of your presentation, using the tools you learned about outlining/organization from the first presentation, and following the sample outline posted on Moodle. Finally, practice your speech to ensure that it fits within the time limit. This will be a challenge, but I know you're up for it.
Your outline and presentation should have these parts:
An introduction. The introduction should explain the situation, identify the actors involved (who, what, when, where, why) and potential audiences (who cares?). This introduction should clearly explain the situation/setting to the reader and should be based on research (e.g. cite your sources!). The audience should understand who the speaker is and what s/he is responding to. Typical situations: awards acceptance speeches, interviews about accomplishments [astronauts, politicians, athletes, etc.] Provide a preview of the body of presentation at the end of the introduction.
Body. The body should identify, explain, and analyze the success strategies used.
A. Discuss the strategies used, connecting specific statements to the lists/strategies Benoit identifies. Cite specific pieces of the speech to support your analysis. Follow the format we have been using in class - base your identification and analysis on what is said (what is in the discourse). Identify the strategy, explain it, and quote from the account verbatim.
B. Evaluate the speech/presentation based on the success strategies used. Was the success rhetoric effective? For which audiences? What makes you think so? (how do you measure it?-you need some evidence!!). Sometimes success speeches can lead to an image crisis - did that happen in this case? Why or why not?
Conclusion. Your conclusion should recap your main points (use structure/signposts), and leave us with a strong clincher/closing statement.
