Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Questions -
Question 1 -
(a) Discuss the steps for translating a CAD part to a CAM part and generating tool-paths in a typical CAD/CAM system.
Question 2 -
(a) Explain and discuss all the steps involved in creating a process plan for CNC machining of a typical part.
(b) Present the process plan for the component shown in Figure Q2 which is machined from a cylindrical bar stock.
(c) Discuss the disadvantages of variant Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) and how these disadvantages are overcome in generative CAPP.

Question 3 -
(a) Describe the required CAD/CAM steps (Process Chain) in Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (Additive Manufacturing, 3D Printing).
(b) Discuss THREE manufacturing capability factors that need to be considered in the selection of a suitable Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (Additive Manufacturing, 3D Printing) process/technology within a Computer Aided Manufacturing context.
(c) Assuming that a minimum support material is to be used, determine the optimal build direction required for the part shown in Figure Q3 having a rectangular through hole A of 120 mm width and 30 mm height and a blind hole B of 100 mm width, 40mm height and 60 mm depth. Assume that that a full volume support is used where there are any overhanging features. Show all the steps of the calculations used.
(d) Would this be best orientation if load is to be applied on the surface marked S? Explain the reason for your answer.

Question 4 -
(a) Explain the term "Reverse Engineering" as used in CAM or Advanced Manufacturing Technology and differentiate this usage from the general usage of the term.
(b) Present and discuss two main applications of Reverse Engineering.
(c) Present a diagram of the workflow that shows the place of Reverse Engineering process in product development cycle and describe each of the steps.
(d) Present and discuss why should Reverse Engineering not be considered to be a "push button" technology?
Note - The subject is computer aided manufacturing (CAM) and the question 3 need explain how you choose the direction.
