Assignment : Rhetorical Modes Essay
Introduction
In the previous two major writing assignments, you presented persuasive and descriptive essays on topics you chose to discuss.
In this assignment, you will again choose a topic, but this time you will also decide what rhetorical mode most appropriately matches your chosen topic, whether cause/effect, division/classification, or process writing. Some topics allow for development using any of the modes, but the resulting essay is quite different in terms of content. For example, a biologist could discuss a particular species of animal.
If the decision was made to discuss the species in terms of cause and effect, the resulting essay would look at environmental factors that encouraged and/or limited that species' development (or perhaps, effects upon the ecology resulting from introducing the species into a new environment).
Alternatively, the animal species could be described in terms of its sub-types and the biological categories of which it is a member. This would require a division/classification essay. Finally, the discussion could concentrate upon attempts to eradicate it from an environment where it is considered a pest. Such discussion would produce a process essay.
Instructions
At the beginning of Unit 9, get started by proposing a topic for this essay and receiving approval from your Open Learning Faculty Member. This assignment is due for marking at the end of Unit 9. Plan, write, edit, and submit a short original essay (800-1,000 words) in which you present specific and relevant information regarding your chosen topic. Your essay must have careful discussion in which you choose and develop a proper rhetorical mode suited to your topic of discussion.
