The International Organization for Standardization is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. The purpose of ISO standard for knowledge management is to support organizations to develop a management system that effectively promotes and enables value-creation through knowledge. Each organization will craft a knowledge management approach, with respect to its own business and operational environment, reflecting their specific needs and desired outcomes 2018)
You are provided an excerpt from this ISO standard for KM, for the purpose of assessing the organisation and its efforts towards Knowledge Management. Below are some clauses that organisations must comply with:
Knowledge management system
The organization shall establish, implement, maintain and continually improve a knowledge management system, including the strategy, the processes needed, and their interactions, in accordance with the requirements of this international standard.
Knowledge development
The organization shall demonstrate that the knowledge management system covers the following activities, for effectively managing knowledge through its stages of development through systematic activities and behaviours, supporting the KMS objectives and covering the prioritized knowledge domains:
a. Acquiring new knowledge
b. Applying current knowledge
c. Retaining current knowledge
d. Handling outdated or invalid knowledge
Knowledge conveyance and transformation

The organizational knowledge management system shall include and integrate elements of all the following enablers to create an effective knowledge management system: Human Capital, Processes, technology and Infrastructure, Governance, Knowledge Management Culture.
