Question: Thoughts on there is no universal way to reconcile ethnic conflict. Such conflict is derived from the competition between ethnic groups for influence and control over state institutions. Where national conflict can be quelled by promising additional autonomy or deevolution of powers to regional representatives, ethnic conflict is rooted in the desire to control others through existing institutions. Even if such measures are taken, they run the risk of solidfying existing ethnic divides and making them permament political fixtures. One possible way to ease ethnic conflict is to implement institutions promoting social and economic equality, thus reducing the potential disparity in influence and wealth between different ethnic groups. Another way could be to instead promote a shared national identity that superceeds any ethnic differences between citizens (such as in a multicultural nation).
