The following task should be assessed as it relates to normal work practice using procedures, information and resources typical of a workplace. This should include:
• OHS policy and work procedures and instructions.
• Suitable work environment, facilities, equipment and materials to undertake actual work as prescribed by this unit.

For this task you are to work with others to effectively verify the compliance and functionality of low voltage general electrical installations on at least 2 occasions, including identifying non-compliance both visually and from test results including the causes and reporting them using the appropriate documentation.

On each occasion you will need to complete the following steps to effectively prepare to inspect and test an electrical installation, in accordance with legislative requirements and established procedures:

1. Identify, obtain and consultation with relevant personnel to understand the OHS measures for the site.

2. Throughout all preparation activities, follow the established OHS risk control measures and procedures.

3. Note down any safety hazards which have not previously been identified, and implement the established risk control measures.

4. Review the documentation or deemed to comply standard on which the installation is based, and consult with relevant others to ensure the information is appropriately understood.

5. Consult with the appropriate personnel to ensure that the work is coordinated effectively with all others involved on the work site.

6. Identify, select and obtain the tools, equipment and testing devices needed to verify compliance, and check them to ensure correct operation and safety.

7. Check the preparatory work to ensure that no damage has occurred and that it complies with all requirements.

Perform the following steps on each occasion to visually inspect and conduct safety testing on the installation:

8. Throughout visual inspection follow all OHS risk control measures and procedures for carrying out the work.

9. Determine the need to test or measure live in strict accordance with OHS requirements, and when it is necessary, conduct it within the established safety procedures.

10. In strict accordance OHS requirements and procedures, check to ensure that circuits/machines/plant are isolated where necessary.

11. Check that the wiring is suitable for the environment in which it is installed and that it is suitably protected from damage or overheating.

12. Confirm that the cable conductor sizes meet the current-carrying capacity requirements as well as voltage-drop and fault-loop impedance limitations.

13. Validate that protection methods and devices meet the co-ordination requirements for overload and short-circuit protection.

14. Validate that switchgear and control gear is appropriately rated and that it meets all functional requirements.

15. Cite evidence to confirm that electrical equipment complies with safety requirements.

16. Check to ensure that earthing system components are correctly located and that the conductors are correctly sized.

17. Check the markings on switchboards for accuracy and clarity and ensure that they comply with all requirements.

18. Conduct the required mandatory tests to verify that :
a. Earthing conductor resistance is sufficiently low.
b. Insulation resistance is sufficiently high.
c. All polarities are correct.
d. Circuit connections are correct as per AS/NZS3000.

19. Conduct additional testing to verify that:
a. The fault-loop impedance is sufficiently low.
b. The residual current devices operates as intended as per the AS/NZS3000.

Complete the following steps on each occasion to report on the inspection and test findings, in accordance with all established procedures:

a. You hear an alarm, there is a fire in another area of the worksite.
b. A co-worker has an accident with a piece of machinery and has been injured.
c. Toxic fumes have been accidently released in your area.
d. The building you are working in becomes live with electricity.
e. A co-worker collapses.
f. Unexpected test results.

Throughout all the above activities, you will need to ensure that you:
• Implement and follow all relevant OHS requirements at all times.
• Apply sustainable energy principles and practices to your work.
• Demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge and skill relevant to the tasks.
• Conduct all work observing the relevant legislation, regulations, polices and workplace procedures, especially those relating to anti-discrimination.

Once you have completed the above activities on at least two occasions, you will need to sit down with your assessor to discuss:
