Mr. Overload is a 68-year-old male who presents to the ED with a chief complaint of shortness of breath (primarily when lying flat), fatigue, and 5lb weight gain in 24 hours. His past medical history is HTN, CAD, COPD, and type 2 DM.
1. What are your initial thoughts on this patient?
2. Mr. Overload has been diagnosed with CHF. What assessment findings do you anticipate you will discover when you complete your assessment on this patient? (Include both normal and abnormal assessment findings you would expect with a patient diagnosed with CHF).
3. Discuss the pathophysiology of this disease process. Also include risk factors, signs and symptoms, complications, and treatment options. What in Mr. Overload's past medical history could have contributed to his diagnosis of CHF?
4. You receive an order to administer Lasix 40mg IV STAT. Discuss the pharmacologic and therapeutic class, indications, contraindications, mechanism of action, and adverse effects of this medication. Also tell me what you will check specifically before administering this medication and why. Are there any other important nursing considerations with this medication?
After talking with Mr. Overload you discover that he is recently widowed. Since his spouse passed, he has had limited exercise and spends the majority of his days inside his home watching TV and cooking microwavable meals.
