An early childhood educator's focus is to support the success of children and families. We do this by building positive relationships that create partnerships with parents.

Our early childhood learning community should be welcoming to parents and families. When we engage parents as partners to support optimal learning and development, we include them in our caring community of learners.

One proactive way to support children's self-regulation is to enlist parents and families as partners in promoting appropriate social behavior as well as appropriate ways to express emotions.

While our teaching, classrooms, and curriculum may support social and emotional development, our success in reducing mistaken behaviors increases exponentially when we extend this learning to the home and community. When we include and involve parents as members of our learning communities, we support optimal social and emotional development, self-regulation, and life-long success in social and professional relationships.

Explain some strategies in which we can engage families in our learning communities. As stated above, we support the success of children by creating trusting partnerships to extend learning outside the classroom.

What does this classroom look and/or sound like? What evidence would be apparent to demonstrate that yours is a safe, welcoming environment that supports children and families alike? Next, reflect on the implications of engaged family involvement in supporting appropriate social behaviors as well as appropriate expression of emotions and feelings.

Would this classroom environment reduce mistaken behaviors? How? Please provide personal examples to support your opinion (either from your own experience or observation).

Lastly, how will your new learning/awareness positively affect your classroom environment (now or in the future)? Has it specifically influenced your guidance philosophy?
