Introduction:
To gain an understanding of where we are today and where we might be going, it is important to have some insight into our past. This activity introduces you to the history of distance education as well as terminology and research for you to gain a better understanding of what is happening in this area.
Objectives :
1. Discuss the history of CBT and Distance Learning.
2. Find and evaluate a quality site on the history of CBT/Distance Learning.
3. Articulate your findings on the history of CBT/Distance Learning in the discussion forum.
4. Define and discuss the basic terminology and concepts related to CBT/Distance education.
5. Use appropriate resources to support your discussion/definitions.
6. Discuss a research article on research in CBT and Distance Learning.

1. History and Definitions:
Read Chapters 1 and 2 in the Simonson et al book. A pdf of this book can be found in BB. Read these articles:

Discussion Forum: You will not see your classmates post until you first post your interesting fact. Post both of this bullet points to the discussion forum in ONE thread.
- Find an interesting historical fact about Distance Learning. Where did you found it (URL). Why was it of interest to you? What is this a reputable source?
- Also answer these questions What do you see as some of the disadvantages of distance learning? Advantages? What sources help IT professionals understand the concept of distance learning and required related IT support?
- Respond to at least 2 other students' posts adding something of note to their post.
Wiki Work: (This is make up work for no class on Sept 4th).
First, make sure you read chapter 2 in the Simonson book. Second, review the Terms powerpoint.
Third, complete the below activity.
You are serving on a committee to provide the company with some background information as they move to deliver training online. You quickly notice that people aren't using the correct terms or they have different meanings to the terms. The committee asks you to provide definitions of the following terms as well as what technology the company may need to implement the training online.
- Pick one of these terms and define it using the course BB wiki. DO NOT REPEAT ONE ALREADY DEFINED. FIRST COME: FIRST SERVE.
- Create a wiki page on the concept/term
- Define the term, list the required technology to implement that concept, and provide a source for the definition. Include other terms that may be used for this concept.
- Edit the Homepage by adding your term and then linking it to your page with the definition.
- Edit at least one classmate's definition by adding something of note. In the comment section identify what you edited.
