  1. Explain each of the three distinctive features (voice, manner, and place) that determine the production of sounds.
  2. List the three primary etiologies of articulation, phonological, communication, and cognitive problems.
  3. Explain how hearing loss could affect the development of communication.
  4. Explain substitution and distortion, and provide two examples of each.
  5. List the general sequence for remediation articulation disorders.

Application:

  1. Explain why it is important to consider a child's articulation errors in all three positions of words - that is the initial, medial, and final positions of words.
  2. Explain why you might consider the frequency of sounds in the primary language when trying to determine which sounds to target with children who have developmental articulation delays.
  3. Discuss how clinicians can maintain a perspective of normal children to help them better recognize and treat children with communication delays and disorders.
  4. Explain what a clinician might informally assess during unstructured rapport-building time.
  5. Discuss how understanding the emotional and social effects of a child's communication problem can help the child.
