BACKGROUND

This class is required to participate in a division-wide, curriculum assessment with two components: one is an in-class score that your instructor will grade and one will be assessed by a team of faculty for college-wide reporting. The college-wide assessment does not affect your grade. The review committee will evaluate the following skills: critical thinking, communication, social responsibility, and personal responsibility.

STRUCTURE

Write your 2-page paper in MLA form using good sentence structure with college-level spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Include the following in your assignment:

- Write the 2-page paper in your own words.
- Cite properly, using MLA citation, for all paraphrased and directly quoted text.
- Times New Roman, 12- point font, one-inch margins, double-spaced.
- Use at least two scholarly sources with proper MLA citations. (Yes, your textbook does count!)

WRITING PROMPT

A Federalist representative democracy requires both personal responsibility and social responsibility of its citizens through personal involvement in the democratic process and the understanding that there are many interests to consider in a democracy. Both personal responsibility and social responsibility may be reflected in the process of voting.

Write a 2-page essay discussing whether and how:

a) the act of voting is the personal responsibility of every citizen, and
b) citizens have a social responsibility to consider how his or her individual vote will affect the diverse interests of the broader community.
