Assignment Requirement

1) A case analysis of Toys R Us (TRU) using a set of materials.  This company's strategy is especially helpful for thinking about cross-cultural effort needed. (TRU was one of the 1st US-based companies to expand into Japanese markets).

BUSINESS CASE ANALYSIS, Toys R Us in Japan.

See attached files of relevant materials about Toys R Us (TRU). Read the materials. Then analyze using the list of factors identified in the Evaluation/Grading Rubric found below.

You will find it helpful to place all major case events into a TIMELINE, so that you can see the sequence of activities described in the case.  Attach the timeline to your paper as an appendix.

Use other research materials as needed. The paper will likely be 8 -plus pages (not including cover and reference list).

Evaluation Factors (grading rubric)

1. Analysis includes a brief summary of major events contributing to a slow start when Toys R Us (TRU) launched its effort to expand in Japan.

2. Analysis has a section, which contains 3 or more examples of important groups and their likely beliefs.  These groups might include senior TRU management, Japanese government officials, consumers, etc. Their beliefs can be interpreted for motivation or intention, using factors of the cultures of Japan and/or the US.

3. Culture discussion section, which uses relevant Hofstede research of both American and Japanese cultural characteristics to identify and compare larger differences between the two cultures.

4. A section identifies and describes people/leadership, which "turned around" first efforts to make the expansion successful.

5. In a new section, discuss the changes in TRU activities in Japan since the initial entry.

6. OPTION In a new section, place yourself in the role of leading a major company expansion into a different culture. What would you do to negotiate different values and build trust?
