The patient began the medication the day before shemeets with the nurse and has taken three doses of the medication so far. The patient complainsthat she gets an upset stomach after taking the medication and currently has a headache. Thepatient has a history of irritable bowel disease but denies any change in bowel habits since startingher amoxicillin treatment. She takes no other medications and has no known allergies tomedication.

A. During a thorough assessment the nurse finds no abnormalities in the exam. Based onthe information provided did this patient have an allergic reaction to amoxicillin?Why/why not?

B. The patient gets frustrated and tells the nurse she plans to stop taking the medicationand just gargle with salt water to treat her infection. What response should the nursehave to this patient's statements? What teaching points should be included?
