Architecture and Systems Integration Assignment - IT Consultant's Architectural Report
Case Study: Ryanair - Technology Strategy
Founded in Ireland in 1985, Ryanair took advantage of deregulation to commence Europe's first low cost airline. Operating in a very competitive industry with rivals such as the Irish national carrier Aer Lingus and British Airways, Ryanair pursued a low-cost but profitable strategy of offering heavily discounted services to regional UK and European destinations. Ryanair is no stranger to technology having built a cutting-edge website in 1999. In the last four years has reinvented its technology strategy with the launch of its technology arm Ryanair Labs.
Ryanair Labs ambition is to become a 'technology company with an airline attached' primarily focused on increasing passenger numbers from 130m / year to 220m by 2024. Voice activation, predictive analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are expected to be part of the way the company interacts with its passengers. Ryanair Labs must also service commercial and organisational functions such as finance, Human Relations, inflight, ground operations and more.
The technology strategy is complex and must be carefully managed for quality and effectiveness especially as the Labs are spread across Europe in Dublin in Ireland, Wroclaw in Poland and Madrid in Spain. Furthermore, Ryanair Labs have invited third party developers from all over the world to come up with innovations and apps useful to Ryanair. Do some more research on Ryanair and Ryanair Labs operational and technology strategy.
Assignment Task -
Assume you are a member of the Ryanair Information Architecture team, and asked to research an information centric solution to achieve their dynamic Ryanair Labs system as described in the case study. Starting with your knowledge of Enterprise Information Architecture Reference Architecture, report on how Ryanair could integrate and manage its many disparate information systems into a unified health information system.
Your target audience is executive business people, who have extensive business experience but limited computing knowledge.
Unfortunately, you have to complete this task in a short period (< 5 weeks), without any direct information source from the business body. The design you provide will mainly depend on your experience, understanding, and vision for the information system.
However, you are free to design and include any functional and non-functional components that you feel important to Ryanair. Keep in mind there are many possible answers the key is to make your design, logic and explanations clear.
The following is a recommended outline for the assignment -
1. Introduction
2. EIA RA - 3 Diagrams and explanations based on IBM EIA RA Templates:
- System Context Diagram
- Architecture Overview Diagram
- Component Relationship Diagram (with descriptions)
3. IT Governance - Discuss the IT Governance required at Ryanair to maintain system quality, integrity and Ryanair reputation.
4. System and Data sustainability - Discuss and asses sustainability issues surrounding data collection and storage.
5. Conclusion
6. Recommendations
