Angela
Angela is a 70-year-old veteran who lives alone in a 3-story walk-up apartment building about 10 miles from family members. She wants to maintain her independence even though her physical movement has significantly deteriorated due to severe arthritis and respiratory issues. She finds it painful to walk and can only get out for shopping once every two weeks. After shopping, she cannot get out of bed for several days and sleeps until the middle of the day due to being awaken by pain at night.
Angela currently receives medical care from her long-time family doctor but has a hard time affording medication. She refuses to apply for addition government benefits due to negative past experiences with the Veteran's Administration and says she doesn't want to be a charity case accepting handouts. Medicare will stop covering the cost of the steroid inhaler prescribed by her doctor which will now cost $150.
Her landlord recently sold the apartment building where has lived for 14 years. She moved there after selling her house when her husband died. The new property managers have raised the rent to $1200 which she cannot afford on a fixed income. She has been given 60 days to leave.
