Case Study: Media plays an important role in shaping our views about many things including family, norms, roles, issues, and how we address them. Films can expose us to a wide range of stories we might not encounter otherwise, and provide rich and meaningful representations of family diversity, family issues, and stages of family development.Using film analysis to explore families and the issues they encounter can help us sharpen our observational and perceptual skills as we look at family dynamics through the lens of a therapist exploring conflicts, motivations, and attempts to cope.
Select a movie of your choice that depicts a family dealing with any of the special issues we explore in class including: race & ethnicity, immigration, LGBTQIA+ families, addiction, mental illness, grief, economic hardships, poverty, blended families and others.
Question: Please include ALL of the following elements:
• Film name
• Year it was released
• Provide a synopsis of the movie
• Detail and describe the main characters
• Detail the family issues depicted
• Discuss family roles that are most closely associated with the main characters.
• Discuss how issues/systems negatively impact the family.
• Discuss strengths the family/members have that might help them through the issues.
• Does anyone in the family display or depict resilience? Explain.
• Create a simple treatment plan, interventions, and recommendations for this family.
• What would success look like? What small improvements might help this family function better?
