4. I don't believe that the Internet can ever be a reliable source for students to use in their work, at least as long as it remains unregulated as it is now. With so many different web sites out there and no way to verify the validity of the information on them, the Internet is just too hit and miss to be of any use. It's just like a bad baseball player; if you only hit one ball out of ten, it doesn't matter if the one you hit is a homerun - the major leagues don't want you.

5. A 1980 study conducted by Letty Pogrebin, Growing Up Free, yielded interesting information about the nature of socialized sex roles in American society.

Pogrebin's study asked 70 Wisconsin children aged three to five what they wanted to be when they grew up. The boys' list included fourteen occupations: fireman, policeman, father/husband, older person, digger, dentist, astronaut, cowboy, truck-driver, engineer, baseball player, doctor, Superman, and the Six-Million Dollar Man. Girls responded with eleven jobs: mother/sister, nurse, ballerina, older person, dentist, teacher, babysitter, baton-twirler, ice skater, princess, and cowgirl.

When asked what they thought they would really be when they grew up, the girls usually modified their choices to historically traditional roles (e.g. mother.) The boys, however, tended to change to more exciting and adventurous roles (e.g. from husband to fireman).

The study suggests that children, even at very young ages, have been socialized into expected roles. The children have clearly been victims of the societal propagation of sexually unequal role conditioning. Unless something is done to alter the mindset of both current adults and those of the next generation, we can expect such attitudes to be regenerated once more with the next crop of parents and children.

6. I was recently hired to find the best cherry pie recipe in the state of Virginia. I found it in the kitchen of Evelyn Smith. My search began by requesting all interested cherry pie tasters to answer my newspaper ad. All respondents in the state met in a central location and tasted cherry pies. Each of 68 persons tasted the five cherry pies that were judged superior at the recent Virginia State Fair. To assure fairness, each "taste" was made on a different day so that the taste buds would not be confused. The winner? Ms. Smith's pie! She received over 40% of the votes. 7. The financial problems of our public schools are highly overrated. In 1992-93, an average $6,100 was spent on every public school student in the United States. Furthermore, full-time public school teachers make an average $34,027 per year according to the American Federation of Teachers. This salary is not at all bad, compared to the 1990 median income of $34,400 of families in the U. S. It isn't insufficient funding or ill-paid teachers that are killing the educational system; it is, instead, the lack of well-trained teachers thanks to grossly lax colleges of education.

8. The trial of Bobby Cherry ("Cherry Bomb") concluded this week. He was found guilty of the murder of four young girls when he bombed a church in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. Images reminiscent of September 11 were on display in the courtroom - firemen and rescue workers with vacant stares, rubble of a famous building in a landmark American city, and distraught family members searching for clues of loved ones. The original hypothesis in the church bombing was that an airplane had crashed on the site. As in Birmingham, the September 11 terrorists considered themselves "religious warriors" fighting off a godless modern society and the will of the US government. Even though terrorist was not a word used in 1963, Bobby Cherry and his fellow bombers were indeed terrorists.

9. The moral values of American youth may be different from their parents, but this does not necessarily mean their moral values are lower. Dr. John Q.
