Assignment Newsletter: Nutrition and Infection Control
Background
In your role as an Early Childhood Educator, part of your job is to connect with families, colleagues in the field, and members of your community. One way to do this is through creating newsletters to communicate important messages and educate your intended audience about issues related to early learning and care.
You will create a newsletter to demonstrate your learning from Learning Outcomes 6 & 7. Your target audience for this newsletter is the families of children you are working with.
Instructions
Section 1: Introductory Paragraph
Imagine you are an ECE working at a childcare centre. Write an introductory paragraph to your newsletter. Greet your audience through your writing, introduce yourself and your newsletter topics, and provide information on how the reader could contact you if they have questions or ideas about the topics you are writing about. (Note that this is for assignment purposes only, it is not required that you include your real contact information). This section will be similar to your Assignment 1 & 2 Introductions, though you will be introducing new topics, and your target audience is now families. Review your Instructor's feedback from Assignments 1 & 2 and incorporate it when possible.
Section 2
One page of your newsletter will discuss Canada's Food Guide and creating appropriate food environments for young children. Write about these topics in detail, discussing their importance, their impact on children's development, and ways that families might foster a positive environment around food and nutrition. Include one hyperlink to a helpful resource connected to this topic. For example, if you are writing about presenting food to toddlers in an appealing way, you may find a link to a resource that gives reliable tips about this subject. Section 3
One page of your newsletter will discuss common illnesses for young children, and effective infection control measures. Write about these topics in detail, discussing how to recognize signs of illness, and the family's role in infection control. Include one hyperlink to a helpful resource connected to this topic. For example, if you are writing about ways to prevent and/or manage the spreading of illness, you may find a link to a resource that gives reliable tips about this subject.
Further Information and Formatting
Hyperlinks to resources must be introduced properly in each section of your newsletter. Give background on the link you have chosen and why it is important.
These resources could include: websites, journal articles, podcasts.
These resources must be reliable, and must align with course material, but should not be taken directly from course content. In other words, they are additional resources that you have thoughtfully researched. They must be found outside of Brightspace and/or the OER for ECE 142.
Your newsletter must:
Be worded for your intended audience (families).
Be no longer than three pages.
Be visually appealing, colourful, and include at least two photos or graphics related to the topics you are writing about.
Be organized logically, include a clear title on the first page, and headings for each section.
Include a reference section, with appropriate references for course material and external resources used.
