Research Paper
The various readings discuss a number of controversial and timely issues including racism, pornography, environmental degradation, terrorism, homosexuality, etc. In other words, there is an abundance of interesting topics available to write about for this assignment so choose a research topic that is of interest to you. I hope this course will not only assist you with learning the technical aspects of writing an effective research paper, but how to critically analyze and deconstruct social issues presented in various forms of media.
A general list of research paper topics in the course announcements. However, you ara not restricted to these topics and can choose your own.
Research Paper - General Instructions
1. You will be required to write a research paper on any social issue. (5 pages typed -12 font Times New Roman; double-spaced with standard margins). The point of the term paper is to learn how to organize, research, analyze and formulate a well written and documented analysis about social phenomenon.
N.B.: A cover page, work cited and/or reference page is NOT included as part of the 5 pages.

A really good way to do research yourself (whether you are in Regina, or anywhere else in the province) is to use the University of Regina library web site. From there you can search for what books the U of R has in the library.

Writing Your Introduction
An introduction is the initial paragraph of your research paper. Without an introduction, it would be very difficult for the reader to determine what you are discussing, arguing and/or analyzing.
Since the research paper is 5 pages double - spaced, the introduction should be between 200- 25O words in length.
Use the following diagram to help you write your Introduction:
1. Prepare a couple of sentences that describes your topic. In this sentence try to grab the reader's attention and effectively states the topic or issue that will be addressed in your paper.
2. Provide some data (usually one oi t vs pieces of information th.at strongly supports your opening statement.
Your conclusion is your last opportunity to have the last word on the subject of your research paper. You are able to summarize the issues you have addressed in your paper, to synthesize your thoughts, to demonstrate the importance of your ideas, and inspire the reader to understand a new' perspective of the subject. A strong conclusion can move beyond the scope of your paper. The conclusion enables the reader to consider broader issues or implications, make new connections, and elaborate on the importance of your findings. The reader should walk away with a new perspective and appreciation of your topic.
Consider the following strategies when concluding your paragraph:
- Include a brief summary of the paper's main points
- Ask a provocative question
- Include a powerful quotation that encapsulates the essence of your paper
- Evoke a vivid image
- Call for some sort of action
- End with a warning
- Universalize your findings (broader implications)
- Suggest results or consequences
