Teaching Students from Diverse Backgrounds

Differentiating Learning for Diverse Learners

Rationale

This section describes the purpose of the assessment task (the 'why').

When students in a class group have different background knowledge and level of achievement, teaching and learning can be differentiated to offer a range of experiences so that each student is able to access an engaging lesson that meets them where they are at and extends them appropriately to challenge them to maximise learning.

Task Description:
This section provides a brief description of the assessment task (the 'what').

This assessment requires you to demonstrate your ability to differentiate learning for students from diverse backgrounds. You will select an existing worksheet or activity relevant to your teaching context and adapt it for two different learners, creating personalised versions that reflect their strengths, needs, and barriers to learning. Your modifications should incorporate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and be clearly annotated to show changes in content, process, product, and/or environment. In addition, you wil write a reflective justification (approximately 600 words) for one of these learners, explaining how your strategies address barriers, promote inclusion and equity, and are informec by relevant theories and frameworks.

Part A: Differentiated Learning Activity

Step 1: Select a Base Worksheet

Choose an existing worksheet suitable for your teaching context (e.g. literacy, numeracy, HASS, science).

Briefly describe:
Year level
Learning area
Learning intention

Step 2: Identify Two Diverse Learners

Choose two learners from the list below:

A student from a low socio-economic background working below grade level
An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander high achieving student
A student with English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
A student with trauma from a refugee background
A student in a rural and remote school with limited access to technology

For each learner, include 50-100 words per learner:
A short learner profile outlining strengths, needs, and potential barriers to learning. (This is a scenario that you create)

Step 3: Differentiate the Activity

Adapt the original worksheet twice, once for each learner. Each version should be a personalised resource that addresses the needs outlined in the learner profiles.

Differentiation may include changes to:
Content (what is being learned)
Process (how learning occurs)
Product (how learning is demonstrated)
Environment (how the learning space supports engagement)

UDL Principles

You must show changes from the original worksheet or learning activity. You must present the differentiated activities as:

Annotated and labelled adjustments with differentiation shown.

Part B: Reflective Justification (Written Component)

This should be written as an academic paragraph, not subheadings.

Choose 1 of your identified diverse learners and write a reflection of approximately 600 words addressing the following:

What barriers to learning were identified for the student? (50 words)
What individual student strengths did you use to support their learning? (50 words)
How did your differentiation strategies respond to these barriers/strengths? (100 words)
How does your approach promote inclusion, equity, and student wellbeing? (100 words)
What theories, frameworks, or research informed your decisions? (150 words)
What insights did you gain about your role as an inclusive educator? (150 words)

You may draw on:
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Differentiated Instruction
Social and Emotional Learning frameworks
Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
Inclusive education principles
