Comment and answer "There is a lot to love about this post but I will restrict myself to 2 things.

1. Differentiating between RNA and DNA viruses having different mutation rates because of the different enzymes they use is very perceptive and spot on. Nice work! You are correct that bacteria have DNA repair enzymes that can maintain the integrity of their genomes, while viruses do not regardless of whether they use RNA or DNA for their genetic material.

2. The broadened view of genetic diversity across viral populations is very neat to consider. When we think of living organisms and evolution we know that diversity in the population is healthy, because any sort of event could kill off a species so diversity means that there are good odds some members of the population will have a mutation that helps them survive whatever changed in their environment. Thinking about this on a viral scale is interesting.

I'm curious what counts as a population when we are talking about viruses?
