Andy Warhol's portrait of a sex symbol who had captured America's imagination in numerous films is representing the reality of her death and her status as an icon. By painting the background in gold before silkscreening her boldly colored face and adding black to emphasize here features, the artist is elevating her status and reveals her persona as a carefully structured illusion. In a sense she gets the treatment of being an icon of the time, a popular cultural figure being represented in a religious form.
