Problem Set 1:

The following data are obtained from a study that seeks to investigate the effects of an intervention program and the extent of their physical disability on their reading, math and IQ scores. The students who had been recipients of an intervention program are in the treatment group and while those who are not are in the control group.

Questions:

1. Are the treatment and control groups comparable? Explain your answer.

2. Are reading, math and IQ scores normally distributed?

3. Is there a significant difference in the math and reading scores of students in the treatment and control groups? What is the implication of the results?

4. Is the intervention program effective? Explain your answer.

5. Is there a significant difference in the math and reading scores of students when they are grouped according to the extent of their physical disability? What is the implication of the results?

6. Is there a significant interaction between treatment and extent of disability on the students' reading and math scores? What is the implication of the results?

Problem Set 2:

In a study of length of time spent on individual home visits by public health nurses, data were reported on length of home visit, in minutes, by a sample of 80 nurses. A record was made also of each nurse's age and the type of illness of each patient visited.

The data on length of home visit that were obtained during the study are shown in Table 2:

The researchers wished to obtain from their investigation answers to the following questions:

1. Is the variable representing the length of time spent on individual home visits by public health nurses normally distributed? Explain your answer?

3. Assuming that the length of home visits is normally distributed, does the type of patient affect the mean length of home visit? What is the implication of the results?

4. Is there interaction between nurse's age and type of patient on the nurses' length of home visit?
