Question 1: Kozol names his book "Fire in the Ashes", meaning the fire hasn't yet consumed everything. The analogy is easier to see in hindsight and how much loss is in the book, but focus on one person, who despite the fire, was not consumed. Your example should be the person, their specific situation, and their outcome.
Question 2: describe the difference between being racist and institutionally racist outcomes. Which do you think sociologists think is more harmful to society and why?
Question 3 So many of you spoke at least about optimism in changing gender roles. Name one thing that is different for you than was for a grandparent of your gender that you consider a good thing. I'll go first. My grandmothers were not expected to go to college. Their lives were their children, husband, homes, friends, church. Although I am 50 now, when I entered adulthood I was not expected to marry and have children (at least immediately), and some of my friends didn't get married or have kids. Name one thing you can celebrate about changing gender expectations (for men or women, because I have another really good one about having my baby and my husband staying home at first!).
Question 4 Besides my friend dying (I literally will always feel bad about that), what is one thing you will remember from this class in 10 years? A reading, a classmate, a post, a response, anything. On my daughter you get the 10 points even if you hated every second of the textbook or anything else you want to share at all. Here is your chance and the only way to lose is to waste it
